Hope for Haiti

On Friday 12th March students and staff from High Tunstall held the ‘Hope for Haiti’ day. Uniform was exchanged for an array of different costumes based around the theme of ’heroes’. The day was based around this theme with an understanding that anyone can be a hero if they are willing to help, contribute or make and effort to support others. Activities ranged from non uniform to wet sponge teacher target practice and the students and staff have so far raised over £2700 to go towards the fundraising for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Invitation to the Future

Our second Parent Forum will take place on Thursday 28th January 2010 at 6pm.

We would like to give you an update on the BSF programme (Building Schools for the Future) and look ahead at what the implications are of a new college for learning and teaching.

Learning Gateway Parent and Carer Evening

Mr Fenwick will host a training evening for parents and carers who would like to know how to access the learning gateway. If you are unfamiliar with the computers, the internet or if you have received your password and are struggling to access the learning gateway then this is a perfect opportunity to come along and get the help you need to access the system. The training session will be held at the College on Wednesday 20th January from 5.30pm until 6.30pm. If you would like to attend then please contact the College to book a place by phone or by email to mfe@htcs.org.uk .

Functional Skills Revision Sessions

With the ICT Functional Skills Exams fast approaching we are encouraging our students to attend revision sessions for topics they need to improve. Places are limited for each session so students will need to sign up as soon as possible. The sessions take place from Monday 18th January until Thursday 21st January and will take place in the ICT rooms from 3.20 until 4.20pm.

Home Access Scheme

The new BECTA Home Access Scheme has been launched and parents or carers who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply for a free laptop and internet package from CAPITA (the company running the scheme). The criteria are:

The child is eligible for free school meals or,

that a parent or carer is:

are on income support
receive income-based job seekers’ allowance
receive Child Tax Credit and have an income of less than £16,040
have guaranteed pension credit
have an income-related employment support allowance
receive support under part 6 of the Immigration and Asylum Act

If you meet these criteria then you can apply for the package. You should call CAPITA on 03332001004 and request an application form. This is a limited offer and once the packages are taken up there will be no more so please apply early.

Year 11 Parents & Carers Evening

The year 11 Parents and Carers Evening is on Tuesday 12th January starting at 4.00pm through until 7.00pm. Students have been given an appointment sheet and should arrange times with their teachers.

College Open

The College will be open as normal on Friday 8th January. All students should attend and lessons will continue as normal.

Don’t accept cyberbullying!

Cyberbullying is when one person or a group of people try to threaten, tease or embarrass someone else by using a mobile phone or the internet. Cyberbullying is just as harmful as bullying in the real world. If you see it happening, report it.

or you can report it to the police via the CEOP website http://www.ceop.gov.uk/

Huge congratulations to the U15 Rugby team who have been named the Daily Mail ‘U15 Team of the Month’. Their success has achieved national recognition and we wish them continued success in there pursuit of Daily Mail RBS Cup.

Examination Success

High Tunstall College of Science saw 71 per cent of students gain five or more A* to C grades, a 10 % improvement on last year with 16% improvement in students gaining 5 plus A* – C including Maths and English.

The college has done outstandingly well. It is the highest results that High Tunstall has ever had in its entire history.
