The steel wall plaques at the entrance to High Tunstall College of Science were designed in 2009 by Y9 students Rebecca Dixon, Helen Lamb, Abigail Sinclair, Hal Totty, Ben and Adam Huskisson. The project was to commemorate the links between Heerema, Hartlepool and High Tunstall College of Science and to raise awareness of possible career routes. The plaques were plasma cut and assembled by apprentices, following detailed specifications given by the students. Copies of the plaques are also on the Hartlepool built decks of the Nexen platform in the North Sea Buzzard oilfield.

Students were hoping nothing will slip their minds when they take part in the finals of a national memory competition.
Youngsters from Hartlepool’s High Tunstall College of Science are delighted after making it through to the finals of the prestigious UK Schools Memory Championships.

Year 9 students Matthew Clark and Alison Roxburgh, both 14, went forward to represent the North of England against the very best in the country after making it through various preliminary heats that tested their ability to retain information accurately.

The pair travelled to Wolverhampton in July for the contest, hosted by eight-time World Memory Champion Dominic O’Brien.

A team of six from the school, in Elwick Road, initially competed in the regional heats at Teesside University which tested their ability to memorise different number sequences, random words, dates and events and playing cards.

The pair, along with fellow student Zach Tarbah, also 14, made it through to the North of England finals, held in Newcastle.

Unfortunately Zach was knocked out at this point, but Alison wowed judges by recalling 21 playing cards in order, finishing 12th from 120 competitors and Matthew finished 19th.

Event co-ordinator at the school and PE teacher James Harrison said: “We have got our fingers crossed for the finals”

“They have done really well to get this far and it would be amazing if someone from the school won it.”

Matthew called the contest a “great learning experience”.

Alison added: “I think it has been a fun and useful experience as these memory skills can be used in our GCSEs.”

Aimhigher Tees Valley provided the funding to allow Tees Valley students to take part in the prestigious competition.

The final took place on July 21st 2010. The students competed with 120 of the best memory students from across the UK. Each student did brilliantly well, considering over 2000 students originally entered the competition. Alison finished in 50th position and Matthew finished 22nd, a great achievement which both students should be very proud of.

This competition is the schools first entry and has raised good interest. Hopefully next year, students at High Tunstall College of Science will go above and beyond the results that were set this year.

On Wednesday 14th July the History department was honoured to have the chance to speak to 96-year-old Hartlepool war veteran Mr Long. Having experienced WWII first-hand and fought at Dunkirk as well as having served in many other parts of the world, Mr Long shared his life experiences with a group of 48 Y9 and Y10 students who are all studying History at GCSE level.

High Tunstall students treated Mr Long with tremendous respect and courtesy, and his memories were very warmly received by the audience. Mr Long also kindly donated his regimental tie to the department, which will take pride of place in a forthcoming display. It is rare (and becoming increasingly rarer) to have the opportunity to speak in person to those who directly participated in the world wars, and those who were lucky enough to participate in Mr Long’s visit went away with much to reflect upon in terms of the service that others have given to protect and ensure our way of life.

Hartlepool Athletics Championships 2010

On Wed. 7th July over 80 students from the College were selected to compete at the District Athletics Championships.
Historically High Tunstall have always performed well at the event and up to 2 years ago had held the Overall Winners Trophy for 6 years. Then it had been English Martyrs who proved the stronger and have held it ever since. This year the students really wanted it back.

The Year 7 Girls worked well throughout the day and managed to finish 4th in a strong group, Leeimi Dodds being the performer of the day for the team- finishing 2nd in the Long Jump with a jump of 3.38m. Manor won this age group overall.

The Year 7 boys performed better and finished 2nd behind English Martyrs (only missing 1st place by 8 points). Team captain Anthony Hannant was the performer of the day in their team, winning the 200m in 30.67 seconds. He also helped the Relay team (along with Joseph Willis, Jonathan Heal and Jason Robinson) set a new College record of 59 seconds.

The Year 8 girls finished 2nd, only 4 points behind English Martyrs. Standout performances from Holly Readman (1st in the High Jump with a jump of 1.35m) and Mollie Macdonald (1st in the 1500m with a time of 5.59 seconds) kept the competition close.

The Year 8 Boys team won the first trophy of the day, finishing a massive 20 points above the next nearest opposition from Manor College. There were many top class performances here, as would be expected from a team who had won the County and come 2nd in the North East Indoor Athletics Championships earlier in the year. These performances included 1st places for Michael Hainsworth in the Hurdles (12.5 seconds), Danny Roberts in the Tripple Jump (10.25m), David Cooper in the Discus (25m) and David Wells in the Javelin (29m). Captain Danny Roberts also won the 100m and set a new College record in the event with a time of 12.60 seconds as well as helping set a new Relay record (along with Tom Brace, David Wells and Luke Hill) of 53.03 seconds.

The Year 9 girls finished 3rd (only 8 points off the lead team English Martyrs). The standout performers included Claudia Hill in the Hurdles (14.98 seconds) and Lydia Boyd-Hill in the Javelin (21.83m).

The Year 9 boys finished joint winners with St.Hilds. The best performances here came from Alex Ramshaw who won the Discus (22.55m) and from Captain Clint Dodd who won the 800m (2.25 minutes). The whole team were superb throughout as several key athletes were missing and all students had to be prepared to do their bit, some in events that were far from strengths. This made the victory all the more impressive.

The Year 10 girls then won their age group, beating English Martyrs (who were County Champions in the English Schools’ Atheletics Championships back in May) by 4 points. This was one of the best team performances from the day. Winners included Taylor Southern in the Hurdles (14.42 seconds), Emma Smith in the High Jump (1.45m), Lauren Rennie who won both the Long Jump (4.20m) and 200m (27.79s), Charlotte Jackson in the Shot (6.89m) and from Captain Demi Burdon in the 1500m (6.03 minutes).

This victory was closely followed by the Year 10 boys who beat English Martyrs to the top spot by 7 points. This was another impressive win from a team plagued by injuries and needing reserves to perform well on the day. Jonathan Conley began the success in the first event by winning the Hurdles easily (13.2s). the 1st places kept on coming with Joel Coulson in the Long Jump (5.33m), Jonathan Mitchell in the Shot (11.77m) and with Captain Eldon Myers completing a double win in the Discus (25.78m) and Javelin (31.69m). Eldon also helped Adam Evans, Jonathan Mitchell and Joel Coulson win the Relay for their age group and walk away with the boys Fastest
Relay Trophy.

All that remained was to crown the Overall Champions. Tunstall knew they had performed well enough during the day but English Martyrs had mostly dominated the Relay events so the final result was not a given. However, the teams efforts during the whole day payed off as they won back the Town Champions Trophy for 2010 by 23 points.

The teams performances and attitude, both on and off the track and field, were a credit to the College and we are very proud, as usual, of all their accomplishments.

A great afternoon was had by representatives from nearly all of the Hartlepool Primary and Secondary schools in Ward Jackson Park boating lake, to launch the schools’ mini tall ships Parade of Sail event.

A group of 4 Year 7 students have spent time on Friday lunchtimes in Technology club to get a moulded hull to float and balance. This entailed making a keel, rudder and buoyancy aids and testing and correcting the ballast of the boat to see if it floated on the college pond – much to the amusement of passers-by! They also used the D&T heat press to transfer the school logo and motto to cotton sails and decorated the ship with flotilla flags.

Congratulations to Helen Wiles, Courteney Syres, Millie Hind and Victoria Murray pictured (L-R) – the boat floated brilliantly and gathered lots of comments for their structural design, and were interviewed by Radio Tees.

[Boo-hiss! to the safety frogman who hit it with his canoe and tipped it up!!!!]

Our pupils cooked up a real storm as they finished second in a Tall Ships-inspired cooking challenge, which took place on Friday 2nd July, at Hartlepool FE College.

Our talented Year 10 team was made up of James Altringham, Rebecca Tebbett, Charlotte Gleeson, Shannon Clark, and Andrew Appleton. The students represented High Tunstall in the masterchef-style Captain’s Table competition, held to celebrate this summer’s big event.

The team had to prepare every last detail of the meal – from table decorations to greeting their guests.

They chose to prepare a tasty meal of pan-fried salmon on a bed of bacon and pea risotto with a balsamic dressing and a trio of desserts.

The food clearly tickled the tastebuds of the judging panel, which included Mayor Stuart Drummond.

The Team Behind Their Table

And although our pupils may not have quite found the recipe for success they gave the judges plenty of food for thought as they finished second in the competition.
