High Tunstall College of Science are please to annonce that we have won a major national award for outstanding progress in Science.
The college is delighted to have won the Science Award in the Education Business Awards 2008 sponsored by BT.
High Tunstall was designated as a Specialist Science College in 2005 and has made considerable progress on its journey towards becoming a flagship College for science teaching.
Recently refurbished laboratories and increased access to new technology facilities have improved the environment and facilitated a move towards personalised learning.
This year record results were achieved with significant increases in the number of A/A* grades for all science subjects. Students achieving A*/A in Biology has increased from 19% in 2006 to 65% in 2008, from 16% to 64% in chemistry, and from 19% to 63% in physics.
Close links with the town’s primary schools also impressed the judges.
Television celebrity Philippa Forrester presented a series of awards at the ceremony. She commented: “These awards reflect the brave decisions that you’ve all taken and the hard work that has gone on in schools and colleges. I congratulate you all.”
Mirjam Buhler-Willey, Headteacher at High Tunstall College of Science, said:
“Everyone is delighted that the hard work of staff and students at the College has been recognised at a national level.
“We were very pleased to be shortlisted for the Science Award but to win outright is absolutely fantastic. Everyone who has contributed to this success deserves a big pat on the back.”
