Modern Foreign Languages

MFL OVERVIEW

The Modern Foreign Languages team consists of 5 full-time teachers. We aim to create a lively and stimulating environment by providing appropriately challenging courses for students of all abilities.
We believe that the study of Modern Foreign Languages plays an important part in preparing students for their future lives. It will help them to live in a multi-cultural society, become attractive employees and learn how to study independently and collaboratively.

In key Stage 3, all students study either French or German. In Years 8 and 9 selected students who have shown an aptitude for languages are given the opportunity to study a second language; either French or Spanish. Progress through the National Curriculum is emphasised at all times.

In Key Stage 4 students in the Red Pathway study for a national qualification. Students study for a traditional linear GCSE.
Results at the Key Stages are improving. In 2007 78% of our students achieved Level 5 or above at the end of Key Stage 3 and 50% achieved Level 6. In 2006 43% of all students achieved Grade A* – C.
In all years groups are taught in a way which provides for a balance of the four skills of Listening, Speaking, reading and Writing. More general skills such as Literacy and Numeracy and the use of ICT are promoted. We recognise that high quality learning is not going to occur without high quality teaching and that as students learn in different ways, we should use a variety of teaching styles.

We benefit form having Foreign Language assistants who work 4 hours per week. Spanish is offered on an extra-curricular basis to students in Year 9.

MFL Curriculum:

MFL KS4:
The department offers 3 languages; French, German and Spanish.  It is recommended that students, who choose to study a foreign language in KS4, continue with the language they have studied in KS3.

Students who have demonstrated an aptitude for languages may choose to study a second language.  Students will follow a GCSE course which will, of course, assume no prior knowledge of the language.

French, German & Spanish GCSE

The principal aim of these courses is to develop the ability to use the language for practical communication.

The four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing are given equal emphasis in the course, and equal weighting in the examination.  Students will all take four separate tests, one in each skill, at either Foundation or Higher level; at the end of the course students will be entered for the test most appropriate to their ability in each skill area, decided in consultation with teachers after the trial examination in Year 11.  The course contains 25% coursework, where three written assignments can replace the writing test.

Foundation Tier can produce grades G-C, and Higher Tier D-A*.  There is a degree of overlap between the two tiers, so that candidates in the C-D range will not be penalised, and it should be remembered that candidates are entered separately for foundation or higher for each module.  Students should provide their own pocket bilingual dictionary to use in lessons.
