Welcome to High Tunstall College of Science. I hope that by picking up and reading our prospectus you are making the first step to becoming a member of our College Community. Our over arching vision is of a College where the pursuit and celebration of excellence is a shared experience. We believe in individuality and thus set about to personalise the curriculum for every one of our students, so that they can achieve their highest personal learning goals.
As the new Head Teacher of the College I encourage you to read our prospectus and then visit us. We shall be holding our Open Evening on Tuesday October 5th 2010 from 6pm and would welcome you all to come and see what we have on offer. I believe that we are at an exciting time in Education, the greater flexibilities given to schools throughout the country is allowing us to really focus on the individual needs of all students. I believe this is something that is already a really strong feature of High Tunstall College of Science and is represented by the improving and amazing examination results this year.
Our continually improving GCSE results shows that the standards achieved by our students are among the best in the North East of England. With 87% of our students achieving 5+A*-C and 56% achieving 5+A*-C including English and Mathematics in 2010 and 314 A* or A grades, it is testimony to excellent relationships between staff and students, a purposeful atmosphere in the College and a focus on learning.
The staff and Governors of High Tunstall College of Science have high expectations of students and strive for an outstanding provision in all areas of their learning. We care passionately about students and challenge them to achieve their personal best, both within and beyond the curriculum. Student participation, partnership with parents, governors and external links with the community are central to our developments.
The curriculum that we deliver is aimed at encouraging students to be confident, independent learners who show respect for others and are actively involved in learning through engagement. We want our students to be positive contributors to their community so we ensure they have opportunities to take part in local activities. We take the voice of students seriously and listen to them when developing the College. We want to ensure the next stage of our development is what you, our community, wants.
High Tunstall College of Science is a fully inclusive College, the Support Base Provision was recognised as “Outstanding” in 2008 by Ofsted and its work permeates the rest of the College. Being highly successful in sport, offering numerous overseas trips, international links and various experiences throughout the United Kingdom, I believe if you decide to become a member of the College community then the opportunities are endless.
As a successful College of Science, we offer all our students the opportunity to excel in this area. In 2010 80% of our students achieved a minimum of 2 A*-C grades in Science. This is an exceptional result, and with recognition regionally and nationally for our outstanding results in this area, we are determined to strive for even better results for the future. We have worked with all our partner primaries and continue to offer our support in developing their Science curriculum.
You will see from the prospectus that we are lucky to have a large site that benefits from extensive grounds and a well-maintained and continuously improving learning environment with investment in ICT facilities. These are crucial in ensuring that young people have the opportunity to learn and achieve. The College also offers the wider community a swimming pool, the Life Centre and the Da Vinci Centre.
I am excited by the prospects that High Tunstall College of Science offers and want to be able to show you the fantastic things on offer for your child at our College. So if you are unable to attend on Tuesday 5th October 2010 I would very much like to be able to show you around in your own time. Please contact me at the College to arrange a visit, I will be very proud to do so.
I look forward to meeting you soon,
Mark Tilling
Headteacher
