Science College Status

Science specialism

High Tunstall College of Science was awarded specialist status in July 2005 and officially took up status as a Science specialist College in September 2005. As a specialist Science College we aim to raise standards of achievement across the whole curriculum and become a centre of excellence in scientific and mathematical education.

We will achieve this by
  • Inspiring students with enthusiasm for science through an exciting and relevant curriculum that is accessible to all students, regardless of ability, and which will encourage them to continue the study of science and maths post-16
  • Applying new scientific understanding of the learning process to develop innovative teaching styles which optimise individual learning
  • Developing thinking skills and intellectual curiosity
  • Using ICT to enhance learning and teaching across the curriculum
  • Enhancing science, maths and ICT facilities and resources for use by our students, our partner schools and our wider community
  • Creating a stimulating learning environment and applying scientific & mathematical principles to support learning and achievement across the curriculum
  • Extending our role as a collaborative partner sharing good pratice and resources  with our partner schools, and our wider community,  with a focus on the transitions between the different phases of education and employment
  • Developing local, national and international links
  • Recognising the need for a scientifically literate society in the ever changing technological world of the 21st century
  • Appreciating the scientific nature of industry in the North East generally, and striving to develop and maintain strong  links with local business and industry.
  • Setting challenging expectations for learning & teaching and promoting personal aspiration, self-confidence and self-worth within our community.
  • Working towards becoming an Eco- School (Green Flag level) with a central role in the community for promoting care of the local
