“There is a growing evidence base to suggest that attendance, attainment and behaviour improves if students have a real say in matters which affect them.” Lord Adonis, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Schools and Learners.
Student Voice at High Tunstall College involves a range of strategies to ensure that every student has the opportunity to express opinions on all aspects of College life.
College Council, led by our Head Girl, Head Boy and deputies, meet monthly to discuss issues raised by College members – both student and staff. All members of the Council have been elected by their Year group or, in the case of the Head Girl/Boy and deputies, by the whole College.
Information is then fed back to Year Councils, whose members are elected by tutor groups to act as form captains. These Councils feed back directly to tutor groups and discussion points or recommendations are then passed on to College Council. Head Boy and Head Girl meet regularly with the Head Teacher and the Leader of Personal Development.

The College has representatives on the Hartlepool Schools’ Forum, which links to all schools via the schools councils. We are also proud to have members of our College in the local Youth Parliament.
Curriculum areas are increasingly collecting students’ opinions and suggestions relating to Learning and Teaching. These are then discussed at curriculum meetings and, where appropriate, used to enhance the content and strategies used within each curriculum area.
As part of the interview procedures for applicants for posts within the college, a student panel is formed. These students are invited to ask questions and to give feedback.
